News for PI clients
Guild Insurance has received enquiries from practitioners about whether their current professional indemnity insurance will cover them when they are treating Australian athletes or team members at the Beijing Olympics. While few practitioners work with Olympic teams, you may have an opportunity to work with a sporting team travelling to another country to compete. In this instance, it is good to know how your Professional Indemnity insurance is affected.
About extensions of cover
If you are a practitioner who is currently working, or will be working, overseas or with the members of an Australian-based team, Guild Insurance can extend cover* under your professional indemnity insurance policy. Cover can be extended for such temporary visits provided that any legal claim against you is subsequently made in Australia. You simply need to contact us to arrange for an extension of cover.
However, if you are working with team members from other countries any claim made against you is likely to be made in that patient/client's country of origin or where treatment was performed. Therefore, we suggest you consider taking out an insurance policy that will cover you in those countries, because Guild's policy will not cover you for claims or legal proceedings commenced outside Australia.
Cover yourself if you work overseas
If you are intending to work for an extended period in another country, Guild recommends that you take out cover in the country in which you are working.
For more information about your current cover or to arrange for an alteration to be made to your existing policy, please contact your local Guild Insurance office on 1800 810 213.
